Another strong turnout for the second outing of the season saw Gerry Smith and Paul O’Hara win the respective Amateur and Professional Ayrshire Winter Golf Association (AWGA) competitions at Western Gailes Golf Club.
Smith, the 2016/17 AWGA Captain, carded a fine 74 and the four-handicapper’s nett 70 was good enough to win by one from a chasing pack that included; John Leith and Thomas Thomson from Haggs Castle, Bill McMahon (Irvine Bogside) and Peter Thomson (Kilmarnock Brassie).
Royal Troon’s Smith made a fast start with four birdies in his opening six holes and signed off with a birdie at the 18th, which proved decisive to win the 2016 edition of the Ian MacLeod Trophy.
In the Professional competition, O’Hara shot an excellent 66 with two nines of 33. The North Lanarkshire Leisure pro won by one stroke from Stephen Gray (Lanark), Paul McKechnie (Braid Hills) and Jason McCreadie (Largs).
A total of 61 amateurs and 27 professionals teed it up at Western Gailes.
